Jo(h)n the Baptist

The Catholic Church lists Baptism as one of the seven holy sacraments and an ordinance of Jesus Christ. The Gospels describe John the Baptist (or Baptizer) baptizing Jesus. There is no doubt that this ritual was established many years ago.

While I would never classify myself in the same category as John the Baptist, I have been a part of several Baptisms in my life. My first introduction to the sacrament goes all the way back to my own in 1976 at St. Peter’s Catholic Church in Marshall, MO. As a cradle Catholic, I have witnessed many Baptisms in which I was afforded the opportunity to renew my own vows. I suppose that I have always enjoyed Baptisms because this particular sacrament symbolize a person’s first real chance to walk with and be close to God.

It seems like yesterday when my good friend, G-Rob, called me and asked if I would be his youngest daughter’s Godfather. I was so honored and jumped at the opportunity. Over the years, I have received additional requests to become a Godfather and each time I answered the same way, “Absolutely!”. After yesterday’s ceremony, I can proudly call 4 young women my Goddaughters. Carriagan, Leah, Hallie, and Arabella will always hold a special place in my heart. I pray that they will always welcome God into their lives. And I pray that I will be strong enough to show them the proper way to live as Catholics.
